Early years
Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Kentucky on February 12th, 1809. His father built the cabin and it didn't have a floor. He had an older sister named Sarah and a younger brother, Thomas. Sadly, his brother died as a young child. When he went to elementary school, he only went for a little bit so most of the things he knew he taught himself, though he strangely knew how to read and write.
As a child, Abe didn't like his father. He was a very stern man. He also couldn't read or write and he could hardly even sign his name. When he was 7, his family moved to Indiana where his father built another log cabin for them. Sadly, Lincoln's mother died when he was only 9. His dad got remarried soon after and Lincoln then got 3 step-siblings. Lincoln loved his stepmother a lot, and they bonded very fast. His stepmother encouraged education, though Lincoln still didn't go to school
When Abe as 17, he got a job on a ferry. After that he built a flatboat (a boat used to carry goods down a river). He transported goods down the Mississippi. When he came home, he reluctantly gave all of his earnings to his father. After that, he built another flatboat and went down the Mississippi again. This time, he WALKED back (about 1200 km). This probably took about 7 to 10 days. When he was 21 he moved again and built another flatboat. After that he moved to New Salem and got a job as a store clerk. In New Salem, he got a good reputation. He wrestled the town bully and he amazed people with his strength to chop down trees and chop rails for fences.
