How he became president
When Lincoln was in New Salem, he ran for state legislator of Illinois. Around that time, the Black Hawk war broke out. It was a war for land, and the leader was an Indian chief named Black Hawk. Lincoln fought in it. The war ended too close to the state legislator election, so Lincoln didn't have enough time to make himself known. In New Salem, he got 277/300 votes, but lost in all of Illinois. After the election he was made postmaster of New Salem. It was the Democratic president that did that-even though Lincoln didn't vote for him. That could be because the democratic president was feeling nice, or no-one else wanted to. Then, he ran for state legislator again, and this time, he won. He won because he didn't make long, boring speeches. Instead, he met a lot of people and told a lot of jokes. He visited almost every house in Illinois. After that he was legislator 3 other times; 4 in total. Later on, he left office for 5 years and came back representing the Whig Party in the House of Representatives. In 1844 Lincoln moved to Springfield to work as a lawyer. He stayed for 10 years and became a famous lawyer. Subsequently, people wanted him to run for state legislator again- but he declined. Instead, he ran for Senate of the United States. He lost, but that election got him a good reputation which helped him become president. He then left the Whig Party and became New Republican, which consisted of Democratic and Whig Party members against slavery. After that, he was in the election for vice president. He did well in that election, but he lost. He was against Steven A. Douglas, and he knew that he had a very good chance of losing. In that election, he made a very interesting speech called "A House Divided". The speech was all about why slavery was wrong and how the founding fathers (George Washington, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin) didn't mean for America to have slavery. The word "house" was a metaphor for America (it was divided against itself because only certain parts of it had slavery). The only problem with that was that two of the founding fathers kept slaves. Finally, Lincoln was in the presidential election of 1860. None of the Republicans thought that they would win - not even Lincoln himself! Before the election, people were starting to dislike slavery. That was helpful for Lincoln because he was totally against slavery. Lincoln won that election. He was president for 4 years, and then he was assassinated. He was killed in Ford's Theatre in Washington by John Wilkes Booth. General Ulysses Grant was supposed to go with Lincoln, but he cancelled. Lincoln's bodyguard was also supposed to be there, but he cancelled also. If they had been there Lincoln probably would have lived because there would have been extra military men there, and a bodyguard. Since they weren't there he was shot. He survived the shot for the night, but died in the morning.
Inspiration
Lincoln said that he owed everything he did to his mother. "All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother" is one of his famous quotations. Strangely, when talking to others he hardly talked about her.
